Traits of Icelanders and why I fit in Iceland

Source
Learning about Icelanders from "The Geography of Bliss" by Eric Weiner made me realize that I culturally fit in Iceland – just culturally! Not geographically as I couldn’t imagine myself living in a place where the sun doesn’t shine for months!

Anyway, the reason why I think it’s my cultural fit because Icelanders don’t care about failing.  In fact, they admire failures and they don’t expect success because for them, it’s the trying that counts (my mantra!).  If you’re free to fail, you’re free to try, they say.  Plus, you can always start over again.

In addition to that, since there is no one telling them they’re not good enough, they just go ahead with whatever they want to pursue –sing, write, paint.  That sounds so like me – I write, I paint, I cook, I do photography, I play some sports, among many others – even if I don’t excel in any of them!  Wahaha…

And unlike Americans and most Westerners, who spend lifetimes pursuing specialization which is learning more and more about less and less (such as in the case of doctors and professionals), Icelanders learn more and more about more and more!:)  People can also easily shift from one career to another. No one is boxed out.  Icelanders believe that no matter what, things will always work out. Cool Viking race. :)

As for suppressing envy so as not to trigger discontent and unhappiness, Icelanders, like the Swiss, also try to suppress it but in a different way.  While the Swiss hide things, Icelanders share things.  Everyone helps one another - including musicians and artists. Ideas just flow freely. If there is any innovation, it could be freely incorporated into the work of others. Amazing. They must have little use for an intellectual property office.  Haha…

These are really fascinating traits from a population of only 300,000 who are predominantly agnostic. :)
